Longer Sleeping Spells tied to Colorectal Cancer

We have seen lack of sleep result in a variety of health issues and cancer is no exception. In fact, a new study seems to have discovered that sleep can be tied up with Colorectal Cancer – longer sleep that is.

What makes it worse is that such would be high risk for individuals who are overweight and the ones who snore regularly. The study was carried out by Xuehong Zhang, MD, ScD, instructor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women`s Hospital in Boston.

A biennial questionnaire was used to determine sleep-related issues. This included that of lifestyle and disease endpoints. With a total of 76,368 women and 30,121 men, researchers documented a total of a total of 1,973 incident colorectal cancer cases.

Apparently obstructive sleep apnea was also tied up to the study, something that may have resulted in the self-reported long sleep durations. The major predisposing factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is excess body weight, and loud snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea.
